Hello All! This week we were busy getting back on track after a fun filled week of art last week. We really jumped into double digit subtraction and man was I impressed! It was very cool to see ALL of the students grasp such a challenging concept. We will continue to work on this skill, but we are off to a great start! Next week the 3rd graders will begin their state standardized testing. We will have a lot of discussions about being calm when walking place to place and the importance of the school being a quite testing environment for the older students. The two weeks following will be the 4th and then 5th graders week to take the test. Please discuss this with your children at home as well so they know what to expect. Testing can be stressful for teachers and students so we want to do our best to help testing go as smooth as possible! We ended the week making adorable bunny ears with our second grade buddies. We had a fire drill right as we were finishing up so it was funny to see a sea of bunnies evacuate the building! Here are some cute pictures I took! Next Week

I hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break! I can't believe we are staring our last quarter of the school year, it is going by so fast! This week we were very busy and the kids did a great job getting back into the routine of things. I have to say a HUGE thank you to Ashley Whipple. Our Art Walk chair looked AMAZING!!! Here is a picture of the adorable chair, and a sneak peak of our art for the Art Walk. For the Art Walk the first grade team decided to do Pop Art. It ended up being very challenging for the students, but they worked so hard and they turned out pretty awesome! I hope you got a chance to stop by the Art Walk and check them out!
Next Week Reading: Next week we will be reading the story The New Friend. Our phonics skill will be oi and oy. Our focus skill will be character traits. Now that we are approaching the end of the year NWEA assessment, we really want to dive deep into comprehension strategies. Writing: Last week our Pop Art ended up taking up a lot of our writing time. We started our thinking map to brainstorm ideas for out Personal Narrative. This week we will continue that and write a paragraph about what we did over spring break. I want to work on editing marks with this narrative and will have them write a rough draft and final draft. Math: We will begin subtracting double digit numbers without regrouping. This skill can be a challenge for some, so we will continue to work on it for the next few weeks. We will also be reviewing fractions, counting patterns, and word problems. As I said before, with the end of year NWEA assessments coming up we will want to review all of our first grade skills to make sure we are as prepared as possible. Grammar: We will be working on contractions this week. We will also be looking at parts of a sentence and identifying the parts of speech. Hope you are enjoying your weekend! -Miss Turco :) Reminders ** 4/10- Mother and Son event at Rover Woohoo! We are going out of third quarter with a bang! These kids have been rockin' and rollin', I am sure everyone is ready for a relaxing Spring Break. I enjoyed getting the chance to meet with all of you and discuss the progress your children have made so far. It really has blown me away. This week we did a fun Social Studies unit. We learned about American symbols, the role of our President, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and The White House. It was so much fun, I love teaching about the history of our country! Our class got lucky this week! Monday was Read Across America, so our Librarian Mrs. Hardesty planned for service dogs to come to our Library class. The students had the chance to read to 3 different service dogs. It was such a great experience. The kids were so great with these dogs, it warmed my heart! We also joined in on "drop everything and read" where we read for 30 minutes straight. Here are some pictures I captured form these two events. I hope you all have a wonderful Spring Break! Please get lots of rest and come back ready to finish the year out strong!
