We have done so many fun activities this week. Our class has adjusted to our kindergarten classroom and we were ready to hit the ground running on Monday. Some of the highlights from this week are: 1) Subtraction Bowling, we had a BLAST practicing subtraction from 10 by knocking over cups! Here are some moments I captured from that day. 2) Our Writing Project, we read the story Jack and the Wolf and did a writing activity and some artwork to go with it! Here are some of the kids getting crafty! As you can see we have been hard at work this week! I have also been VERY impressed by behavior this week, continue to reinforce that at home!
Next Week Reading: We will be reading an informational text about how animals communicate. Our sound of the week will be words with beginning r blends. Ex: drip, crab, brag, etc. Our focus skill next week will be informational text features such as table of contents, glossary, bold words, and captions. Math: Next week we are going to continue learning about graphs. We will first review tally charts and picture graphs, and then begin our study of bar graphs. We will practice making bar graphs and learn how to analyze and interpret data. Writing: We will be writing an expository/informational narrative about how animals communicate. We will use our reading story of the week to gather facts and information before writing our narrative. Grammar: Next week we will continue writing correctly structured sentences. We will be using a "Sentence Buddy" to make sure we have all the important parts of a sentence. Reminders **This week I sent home a form to schedule parent-teacher conferences. If you have not returned that form please do as soon as possible to ensure you get a time that works for you! I will be sending home a paper with your conference date and time next week so please keep an eye out! **Picture day is September 24th. If you wish to purchase pictures please look over the information that was sent home this week. **Repairs have started in our classroom! I still don't have an exact timeline but I am happy to see progress is being made! Thank you all for another great week! -Miss Turco Thinking back to the beginning of the week, I had no idea what was in store for us. When I found out on Tuesday that the flood damages caused our classroom to be inaccessible for a few weeks, I was pretty upset. I spent so much time over the summer setting up our classroom, and I already felt like we were starting to make great memories there. I was feeling pretty blue when I went to pick up our class from the playground that morning. The kids this week have been amazing dealing with these changes. They helped remind me that it does not matter where in the school we are. Learning, working together, and making the best out of any situation is what it's all about! They cheered me right up! Here we are hard at work in our new space for the next few weeks. For those of you who don't know, we are now in Ms. Callandar's class, room 7. I really hope that the repairs only take a few weeks! Next week we will resume "Walk to Read," homework packets, and spelling tests as normal. Please have your child turn in their homework packet on Monday to their reading teacher.
Next Week Reading: Our phonics sound next week will be short vowel a. We will be looking at words with the ending blend _ck, such as back, sack, tack etc... Our focus skill next week is summarizing with a focus on retelling the character's actions. Math: We will be starting subtraction next week! We will be doing some fun, hands on activities to develop our understanding. Some different strategies we will be using are: -Number Line -Part-Part Whole -Pictures -Counting back Writing: Next week we will be starting a unit on writing informational/expository narratives. We will look at different types of texts to learn the difference between this and a personal narrative. We will learn what facts are and how to write them in complete sentences. Science: We will continue to learn about different types of weather. We got a pretty good lesson about rain this week! :) Grammar: We have now learned about nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Next week we will focus on forming correctly structured sentences. We will practice by putting sentences in the correct order, and adding adjectives to write "juicy" sentences. Reminders **We will have our normal library class on Monday so please be sure your child has their book! **I currently do not have my school phone. If you need to call please leave a message with the front office. My phone was misplaced as people were packing up my classroom. Hopefully it is located soon! I just have to say a huge thank you to all of you for your flexibility this week. I know it has been a little chaotic as we worked out all of the details. Next week should run more smoothly, I am excited to have a more normal week! If you have any questions please email me and I will get back to you as soon as possible! Enjoy your weekend. -Miss Turco Hello Families!
I can't believe we just finished our first week of SEPTEMBER! Fall is my favorite time of year, now if the weather would just cool off a bit I would be one happy camper. This week I handed out progress reports. Thank you to the parents who signed and returned them promptly. Your children are already making great progress this year, I can't wait to see all that they accomplish. It was so nice to have a three day weekend, but this week we had a lot of work to do! We had a class discussion and talked about how important it is to have good behavior when our days are so busy! Some things we are working on are: respecting whoever is sharing or speaking, respecting each other, and not making strange noises during work time. Please reinforce the importance of having good behavior at home! I like to consider our first grade class a family, we all have to work together and help each other out to be successful! Next Week Reading: "Walk to Read:" The phonics sound this week is short vowel u and our focus skill is story elements such as, characters, setting, and plot. Math: We are starting a unit on graphing. We will start with collecting data using tally marks. We will be creating picture graphs or "pictographs" in class. We will also interpret data using graphs that are already created. Writing: We will be writing a personal narrative describing our favorite activity we have done this year so far. We will sequence our narrative using the transitional words: first, next, and last. Science: We will be reviewing the four seasons. This time we will be focusing more on the weather that comes with each season. Grammar: We will continue our wonderful work on adjectives this week! Reminders *PTA fundraiser orders are due by Monday. *There is no school next Friday, September 12th, it is a professional development day for teachers. Have a great weekend! -Miss Turco |
