Hello All! With our short week coming up I only have a few updates. First of all, thank you to the families who donated to our Rover Food Drive. As a school we collected SO many food items for families in the community who are in need. Also, thank you for returning the coupon book/orders. As a school many teachers, including myself, are thankful to be getting items that were ruined in the flood replaced. Next week is a two day week, we will only have school Monday and Tuesday. I have lots of fun Thanksgiving themed activities planned, I can't wait! Because of the short week, we are going to have P.E. and Music class on MONDAY instead of Tuesday. Please be aware of this change if your child wears different shoes on P.E. days. On Tuesday, Mrs. Hardesty (our Librarian) will take all of the first grade students into the Ram Arena to watch a Thanksgiving themed movie during our specials time. We will NOT be having our normal library class so the students will not be able to return and check out a new book. Please look for progress reports coming home on Monday 11/24. Sign and return them the following day! Here are a few pictures of the students who finished their "History of the United States" Timeline. If the students did not finish they will have a chance to work on it on Monday next week! Next Week
Reading: We will NOT be having "Walk to Read" this week. We will be reading an informational text about turkeys. The kids will make a turkey with the main idea on it's body and details on the turkey's feathers. Math: Next week we will do some turkey themed graphing! We will also be reviewing fact families. Writing: We will be learning the parts of a friendly letter, and will practice writing letters to our loved ones. Grammar: Next week our focus will be contractions. **We will be doing various art projects next week and a reader's theater to retell the story of the first Thanksgiving! Reminders **January 30th will be the Rover Art Walk. Each class will be responsible for creating a chair to auction off. If you are able to get any type of rocking chair from Goodwill, or another inexpensive place please let me know! Also, if you have any ideas for how we could decorate the chair or are willing to help out please email me! I would love to have a few parents help with this! **On Monday progress reports will be sent home. I hope you have a fabulous weekend! -Miss Turco

Hello All! This week went by very quickly since we had Tuesday off! Thank you to those who have been able to donate to our food drive. Keep the donations coming next week! We have a box in the classroom to collect everything before the Thanksgiving holiday. Next week we will continue to learn about the history of the United States, which includes the reasons we celebrate Thanksgiving. I love this time of year because it reminds me that we have so much to be thankful for! I am thankful this year to work with such an amazing group of kids, and their wonderful parents. It is important to give thanks where it is due. This week we created a turkey in our classroom, each student made a feather sharing what they are thankful for. I think it turned out pretty cute! :) Here are some cute pictures I took while we were working on some "caterpillar math" for our measurement unit. We used caterpillars to tell if things around the room were longer than, or shorter than the caterpillar! Here are a few more pictures of the kids working on their "History of the United States" timeline. It has been so fun to spread out across the classroom and work on a big project like this! Next Week
Reading: We will be reading a story called The Big Race. We are finally starting our journey in to long vowels. This week our phonics skill will be long vowel a. Our focus skill will be drawing conclusions. Math: This week we will start place value. This is a huge concept for first graders to grasp and we will be working on it for many weeks throughout the year. We will start this week learning how to compose and decompose two-digit numbers using tens and ones. Writing: We will focus on informative writing. We will use the story The Big Race from our reading book to write facts that we learned about the sport running. Grammar: Next week we will learn about verbs past and present tense. We will be deciding what verb fits best in a sentence and then will be writing our own sentences using past and present tense verbs. Social Studies: As I mentioned above we will continue learning about the history of the United States. This week we started a timeline that we will wrap up next week. It has been so much fun for the students to work on their large timelines, they have been SO focused during this time! Reminders: **Monday is the last day for me to either collect the coupon book for the PTA fundraiser or $20.00 if you would like to purchase it. This fundraiser is super helpful because it will be helping the teachers repurchase items that were ruined in the flood. **The week of Thanksgiving we only have school Monday and Tuesday 11/24 and 11/25. **Bring canned food or non-perishable food items for the Rover Food Drive! Thank you! -Miss Turco Hello First Grade Families!
I feel like I have a lot to update you on for the next few weeks so let's get started! 1. Last week I sent your child home with a coupon book for our school fundraiser. If you are going to purchase the book that is great! Please send your money to school this week. If you are not going to purchase the book, please send the book back to school with your child! I will either need to collect money, or the coupon book from you! 2. The food drive has started! Please bring canned food or food items you wish to donate to school. I have a box in the classroom where I will be collecting every donated item! 3. There is no school on TUESDAY 11/11/14 in observance of Veterans Day. Next Week: Reading: Next week we will be reading an information text called Seasons. Our phonics skill will be digraphs sh and wh. Our focus skill will be cause and effect relationships. Writing: We will be writing about our favorite season, giving reasons to back up our opinion. Math: We will start a week long unit on Measurement. In first grade we focus on comparing lengths of different objects. We will use the key words long (er, est) and short (er, est). Social Studies: This week we will start a unit on timelines. We will be creating a timeline as we learn the history of the United States. We will learn about The Native Americans, Christopher Columbus, The Pilgrims, The Colonists, and the Constitution. Grammar: This week we will focus on contractions. Have a great week! -Miss Turco :) |
