Hello and welcome back from Winter Break. I hope everyone spent their 2 weeks off enjoying time with family and friends. We got right back to work last week and were ready to hit the ground running. It will be a busy quarter with lots of fun stuff going on. Please read this post to find out about important upcoming events/changes being made to start off 2017!
Study Hall: As a first grade teaching team we have decided to start weekly "Study Hall" sessions. As a whole we have noticed the same students not using their time wisely or not pushing themselves to complete their work. In an effort to prepare students for the increased work load in second grade we are having students with incomplete work go to Study Hall on Fridays instead of extra recess. Our hope is that students buckle down during work time so we have either very few students in study hall or can eventually eliminate Study Hall all together. Upcoming Field Trip: We are anticipating a field trip in April. In order to chaperone, you have to fill out a parent volunteer form and get fingerprinted at the Tempe District Office. Fingerprinting is scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8:30 am and 10:00am and is by appointment only at no cost to you. Please call 480-730-7132 to schedule an appointment. If you were fingerprinted last year, you do not have to refingerprint. However, you have to fill out a new volunteer form each year and have it notarized. Please note this is a 60 day process, so you must get the necessary paperwork done in order to chaperone a field trip. Please let me know if you have any questions! -Miss Turco :)

I love doing projects where the students have a chance to spread out around the classroom and take charge of their own learning! Our class is now set up on Front Row. Follow this link to the Student Login page:

Hopefully the last few days have gone well with our sub, I know the kids are in great hands with Mrs. Sexton. I will be back Tomorrow, I can't wait! On Wednesday we will be having an On Demand Writing Assessment. We will start right at 8:00. Students will be given a prompt, time to create a thinking map and write a rough draft and time to write a final draft. We will be taking a quick recess break after students finish their rough draft. I know writing tests can sometimes be overwhelming for students but this assessment will just be used to see where students are at the beginning of the school year. We will take the official writing assessment for the state in November. It is that time to sign up for our Parent/Teacher Conferences! I love having this time to meet with you and discuss your child's progress so far in first grade and look at some goals for the rest of the school year. To sign up please click on the link below. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f084baca92ba3fc1-parent Last week in math we worked on fact families or related addition and subtraction facts. To understand this concept I put the students into groups of three and gave them each a number. They made their number poster and then met with their group to create 2 addition and 2 subtraction facts. Each group showed their facts to the class, it was a lot of fun! I love doing hands on learning to help kids grasp ideas! 5+6=11 6+5=11 11-6=5 11-5=6 3+6=9 6+3=9 9-3=6 9-6=3 7+4=11 4+7=11 11-4=7 11-7=4 8+2=10 2+8=10 10-8=2 10-2=8 9+5=14 5+9=14 14-9=5 14-5=9 10+4=14 4+10=14 14-10=4 14-4=10 5+8=13 8+5=13 13-5=8 13-8=5 I Love Seeing these kids take ownership of their learning! Please feel free to email me or contact me through Remind if you have any questions or concerns. I will see you Tomorrow! -Miss Turco :) Happy Monday! I hope you all enjoyed your four day weekend! Last week, we finished our NWEA math test so we are officially done with testing until December, woo hoo! I do love to see how the student do on these first few assessments because it helps me target specific areas to work on in the classroom. You will have an extra long weekend coming up. As I said previously, we do not have school on Friday, it is a teacher workday. There is also no school on Monday in observance of Labor Day. Just a heads up, I will be out of town from September 8th-12th. I am a bridesmaid in one of my best friends weddings in Madison, Wisconsin. Our sub will be Nanci Sexton who most of the students have had before. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Here are some pictures from last week!
