This week has been awesome! As you know, we started "Walk to Read" on Monday. The whole first grade team has been SO impressed by how quickly the students adapted to this change. I truly believe that "Walk to Read" is going to be the most beneficial way to teach first grade reading. These kids have a wide range of skills, and with this approach we will be able to give each student exactly what they need in order for them to be successful. This weekend is a three day weekend in celebration of Labor Day. Thanks to all you hard working parents out there, you deserve a day of rest! With hard work in mind, today was college day. The students were asked to wear a shirt representing the college they wanted to attend. It is never to early to start this conversation with your children. Get them pumped up and motivated about their education and future. I have to give a shout out to Davis Semple for being my only student to rock ASU gear! Here is a picture of us in our maroon and gold showing our SunDevil support with a "pitchfork" hand signal! Next Week
Reading: Even though we are doing "Walk to Read" our phonics sound and focus skill will be the same. This week our phonics sound is short vowel u. Our focus skill is questioning. **Remember the reading teacher will be handing out and collecting homework packets from now on! Writing: This week we will be writing Personal Narratives about the community we live in. The students may write about their family, school, neighborhood or whatever feels like a community to them. We will be using thinking maps to brainstorm and plan our writing. Math: We will continue to focus on addition strategies next week. The strategies we practice include: -Part-Part Whole -Number Line -Counting on -Using doubles to add We will also be using a number line to practice counting forward and backward. Grammar: Next week we will learn all about adjectives! I love teaching about adjectives because they make the student's writing assignments so much fun to read! We will be doing various activities to brainstorm descriptive words, and practice using them in a sentence. Reminders *Progress Reports will be handed out on WEDNESDAY. Please sign and return them by the following day. *There is no school on Monday in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and have a great three day weekend! -Miss Turco

Hello Parents! What a week it has been! I would like to say a huge thank you to the parents who were able to attend Curriculum Night on Thursday. I love to communicate with everyone about what is going on in our classroom. It is so fun to share stories about your children and the awesome things they do each day! If you missed it, no worries! I sent the "Curriculum Packet" home in your child's red folder. If you have any questions about that information feel free to contact me. This week was a little crazy. Rainy days, lots of energy, and watching our Principal get soaked in ice cold water. Yes, that really happened! I am sure you are all aware of the "Ice Bucket Challenge" people have been partaking in to raise awareness and money for ALS. Rover took on the challenge this week, and we had tons of fun watching some of our staff members get soaked for a great cause. Here is a picture of our class eagerly awaiting the challenge! Next Week
Reading: On Monday we are starting "Walk to Read!" Remember your child will now be with a different teacher for our reading block. Look for more information and a homework packet coming home from that teacher. As a grade level we will still be working on the same phonics sound, short vowel o. And the same focus skill, sequencing events. Math: We will be working on different strategies to use when solving addition problems. The strategies include: *Part-Part Whole *Counting on *Using a Number Line *Making Doubles to Add Writing: We will continue to work on Personal Narratives with a focus this week on word choice. Science: We will finish our unit about the four seasons. Grammar: Our focus this week is Action Verbs. We will be building sentences using mental and physical action verbs! Reminders *Library is Monday, so make sure your child returns their book. *Sign up for "Remind 101" and always be in the loop about what is going on in our classroom! To sign up for Remind 101: 1. Create a new text message and enter the number: 623-552-2284 2. Send the message: @420e0 3. Follow the prompt it sends you (enter your full name) and you will be good to go! Have a great weekend! -Miss Turco We have had another successful week of first grade! We were busy bees this week. I was so happy to see the students jump in and challenge themselves in every subject! We accomplished our first spelling and reading test, so keep an eye out for graded work coming home next Monday. I was impressed to see the amount of completed homework today. I hope you were able to set up a routine for doing homework after school. Thank you for encouraging your child to do their very best!
NEXT WEEK Reading: Next week our focus will be character traits. Each child will first identify their own personal character traits. Then we will identify the traits of different characters in our story. Our sound for the week will be short vowel i. Keep an eye out for our spelling list coming home on Monday. Math: This week we ended up working on making 10 instead of teen numbers. I didn't feel like we were solid enough to move on to teen numbers as we had planned. We are now experts at making 10! Next week we will be working with teen numbers. The focus will be on the fact that teen numbers are made of 10 plus another number. Example- 10+1=11 10+2=12 10+3= 13 And so on... We will be using 10 frames and unifix cubes to make sure each student is having a hands on learning experience. Writing: This week we will continue Personal Narratives. We will be planning our writing using a circle map, and attempting to write 4 complete sentences. Of course the students will be illustrating their work with a detailed picture. Science: We will be taking a look at different types of weather. We will look at how weather changes throughout the four seasons. Grammar: Our focus this week will be adjectives. This will go perfectly with character traits in reading! Reminders *Please make sure your child returns their library homework on Monday. If it is not returned they will not be able to check out books from the library. *Curriculum Night is this THURSDAY! I will be having two sessions, but you only need to attend ONE. The times are either 5:00-5:20PM OR 6:30-6:50PM. Thanks for another great week! Please let me know of any questions or concerns! -Miss Turco Woohoo! Not only did we survive the first week of school, but I have to say, it was pretty awesome! First of all, let me say THANK YOU to all the parents who donated supplies to our classroom. I am blown away by your generosity. Because of you, we will be able to do many fun activities, giving your child opportunities to learn in different ways! Again, please know how much I appreciate your support! :)
This week, we took time to get to know each other, learn classroom procedures, and warm up our brains after a long hot summer! I noticed many wonderful things this week. I watched shy students open up and form new friendships. I saw students in the class become leaders, eager to help their classmates and teacher. I saw students curious and excited about the year to come! It makes me so happy to have such a great group of students. NEXT WEEK Reading: The Tempe School District has adopted a new reading curriculum. Each class in first grade is assessing our students to make sure we are effectively using our new curriculum to meet everyone's needs. We will begin short vowel a next week, along with learning about main idea and supporting details in a story. Please look out for a spelling list coming home in the red folder on Monday. Thank you for patience next week as we are finishing up our assessments, and encourage your child to do their best! Math: We will be working with teen numbers. The focus will be on the fact that teen numbers are made of 10 plus another number. Example- 10+1=11 10+2=12 10+3= 13 And so on... We will be using 10 frames and unfix cubes to make sure each student is having a hands on learning experience. Writing: This week our focus will be Personal Narratives. We will be planning our writing using a circle map, and attempting to write 4 complete sentences. Of course the students will be illustrating their work with a detailed picture. Social Studies: We will be focused on what it means to be part of a community. Whether it be classroom community, neighborhood community, or family community. We will be doing activities that make the students more aware of the things around them. Grammar: Our focus this week will be nouns. We will be doing various activities that allow the students to identify nouns as a person, place, thing, or idea. Reminders/Updates *We have PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays, make sure your child has appropriate shoes on those days. *The "First Week Homework" person outline is due next Friday, 8/15. *Look for spelling and a few other homework items in your child's red folder on Monday. *Sign up for Rover PTA if interested. I am looking forward to next week, and I hope everyone else is too! Reinforce the great behavior I saw this week by reminding your child about respect. Ask your child this week how they showed respect in our classroom, I am sure you will be very impressed by their answers!
